Student Preparation for Pediatric Simulation
Learning Objectives
- Conduct a complete assessment on the pediatric patient
- Identify and initiate specific patient interventions related to pediatric developmental ages
- Identify specific needs and prioritize outcome criteria
- Perform ADL’s as needed for patient care
- Complete a thorough pain assessment appropriate for patient’s developmental level
- Administer appropriate analgesics
- Incorporate complementary therapy
- Utilizes therapeutic communication techniques
- Identify signs and symptoms of respiratory distress
- Utilizes appropriate assessment findings
- Administers oxygen
- Safely administers medications and evaluates effectiveness
- Document patient care
- Discuss the pharmacokinetic considerations with drug administration in children versus adults.
- Demonstrate how safe dose is determined in children
- Discuss the developmental considerations as regards drug administration in each pediatric age group.
- State the essential principles involved with the various types of drug administration.
- Demonstrate competence in medication and math calculations by attaining a passing grade on the medication and math quiz.
Setting for Pediatric Simulation
Pediatric Simulation is held in the NLAB on the corner of 10th Ave & Osborn

Knowledge Preparation
Review the pathophysiology and clinical manifestation of:
- Appendicitis
- Gastroenteritis
- Sickle Cell Crisis
- Meningitis
- Respiratory Distress / Pneumonia
- Asthma
- Review developmental levels and interventions
- Review safe oxygen delivery methods
- Review fever control methods for children
- Review laboratory and diagnostic findings related to infection
- Review the handout: Medication Administration for Children
Skill Preparation: You will be practicing the following
- Head-to-toe assessment
- Pain Assessment
- Pediatric approaches/communication
- IV, PO, GT medication administration
- Application of oxygen delivery systems
- SBAR use
